Steve Harland update
Thursday, 19-Aug-00 -

We were fortunate in Ontario to have the services of Steve Harland in Ontario from August 6 to August 18.  His visit included

  • August 7 to Ottawa,  including working with referees at Twin Elm on Saturday August 8
  • August 10 Nations Cup and a Niagara Society meeting on August 10 at Appleby College
  • August 11 TDRRS Meeting followed by referee coaching at Fletchers on August 15
  • August 12 National Festival and Meeting for Ontario Referee Coaches
  • August 13 Nations Cup at Appleby where the referee from England, Claire Daniels, is one of his referees
  • August 15 at Fletchers working with refeees and referee cvoaches.

Steve took up the whistle after injury curtailed his playing career and has enjoyed officiating for the past 19 years, including the last 11 years as a member of the RFU Panel of National Referees.  For the past four years, he has been employed as the RFU Referee Development Manager for the South West of England.  In that position, he is a successor to Andy Melrose who many of us know from his visits to Ontario.

Although originally from London, Steve now considers Plymouth his home after being drafted to join a ship in Plymouth 24 years ago.  He played for many ships and establishments during a lengthy career in the Royal Navy as a specialist communicator.   He is an active member of Devon and Plymouth Referees Societies as well as maintaining close links with the Combined Services and Royal Navy Referees Societies.  In 2005 he was made a Life Member of the Royal Navy Rugby Union, an honour of which he is extremely proud.

Steve considers himself fortunate to have officiated in many countries around the globe, enjoying the camaraderie that the great game offers and hopes to continue to do so for some time yet.   He has a wealth of experience which he willing shared with the referees of Ontario.  Many thanks, Steve!
