Ontario referee Joyce Henry was the one with the whistle for the opening match of the Nations Cup on August 10 - a contest between France and South Africa which ended in a tie after a last minute try by France. She followed this with another appointment on August 13 - refereeing France and England. After a shaky start, England were dominated this one in the same way that they had overcome the USA in their previous match. Canada came next with a fine performance and a convincing win against South Africa.
At the weekend, Karen Lozada was in charge of the South Africa v USA match - easily won by the USA. This was followed by a close win for France over hosts, Canada.
On August 19, Karen was in charge of the England v South Africa. This was followed by a nail-biter when Canada took on the USA in what is always a close encounter.
The last round of the Nations Cup will be at Fletchers on Saturday August 22. Previous rounds were held at Appleby College, Oakville. The Cup features the Senior Women's teams from 5 major countries - England, France, USA, South Africa and, of course, Canada. These are full international matches featuring some of the top teams in the World. It is a showcase of Women's Rugby at its best.
Congratulations to both Karen and Joyce on their referee appointments. Acting as Assistant Referees have been Ontario referees Derek Stoltz and Andrew Hall. In the supporting cast are Andrew Hosie, Breanne Freeman, JC Gilbert and Rose Labreche in the role of #4, #5 or #6. We wish them all the very best.
