As referees one of our key roles is to ensure that the game is played in a safe manner particularly at the U19 level. The U19 variations must be strictly enforced together with the prohibition on the use of squeeze ball. Boots on bodies must be dealt with strictly according to Law.
Squeeze Ball
Rugby Canada has banned Squeeze Ball at any grade below Under 19 because it is a potential safety risk. It must not be allowed by any referee in Ontario. If you are refereeing a game where you observe this happening you must penalize it immediately. Please then remind the team and coach that this practice is not allowed in Canada in games below U19.
There are NO Exceptions to this.
Squeeze ball is permitted in Senior matches but only on the condition that the ball is available immediately. Any delay must be sanctioned.
Boots on Bodies
At age grade rugby we have to be very conscious of maintaining strict safetystandards. It is important for the on going development of rugby in Ontario.
The law says : A player rucking for the ball must not intentionally ruck players on the ground. A player rucking for the ball tries to step over players on the ground and must not intentionally step on them. A player rucking must do so near the ball. (Law 16.3F)
This is important to understand. Players are not permitted to use their boots on players. It is a safety concern and all referees should be vigilant in penalising players who infringe this law.
Further Law 10 - Foul Play says : A player who infringes any part of the Foul Play Law must be admonished, or cautioned and temporarily suspended or sent off. (Law 10.5A) |
