This year's McCormick Cup has been expanded from previous years. The first three rounds, being played in September, consists of 4 groups of 4 teams each playing round robin competition. The teams are the Marshall teams plus the top finishers from the Bardon, Jones and Keenan Leagues. At the end of the round robin phase, the top 2 teams from each group will proceed to the elimination phase. This consists of quarter finals on Oct 3, semi-finals on Oct 24 and the final on Oct 31. There are no games scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend, Oct 10, nor Oct 17 when the Americas Cup finals are being played in Toronto.
There is also another competiton, presently called the Second Tier Cup. This consists of 13 teams who will play 3 games each in September followed by elimination matches in October. Entering the league stage are teams from the Jones and Keenan Leagues who did not qualify for the McCormick Cup, teams from the Niagara and Toronto Premier Leagues, plus some second teams from the Marshall, Jones and Keenan League and even Balmy Beach third team. The top 8 teams from the league stage will qualify for the elimination phase. They will be joined by the bottom 2 from each group of the McCormick Cup round robin. These 16 teams will play a knock-out competiton culminating in a final on Oct 31.
There is no Intermediate Cup competition and no independent 2nd team competition.
Appointments to Second Tier round robin will be made by the Branch Societies. Appointments to all McCormick Cup games and to the elimination phase of the Second Tier Cup will be made by the ORRS.
The September matches are all round robin games so ties stand and no overtime is to be played. The October games are all knock-out matches so a tie breaker is required. This consists of 10 minute periods of sudden death overtime until somebody scores.
The action starts on Saturday September 12. Should be an interesting Fall season!
