Saturday November 14 saw four exciting cup matches at Fletchers to round out the College season.
First on the programme was the OCAA Bronze final between Seneca and Trent. After a see-saw battle, Seneca scored the winning try almost the last play of the match. The bronze medal was theirs by a margin of 17 - 15.
.
Phillip Sutherland was the man in the middle, ably assisted by Steve Gasparek and Jon Butcher.
.
The OCAA Gold also came down to the final play. Humber were leading 15 - 11 but Mohawk were pressing down the left wing. Over the goal line they went but a foot was in touch - no try. Over again, again near the touch line - Referee Cronje looked at Asssistant Referee Taylor - a little nod, and Mohawk were home by the slenderest of margins 16 - 15.
The officials were Moe Chaudhry as #4, Marty Taylor on one touch line, Roelie Cronje in the middle and Ben Wood on the other line.
The OUA Bronze featured the Gold medalists from the past two years, Brock and McMaster. Following their success in the League game Brock were able to hold of a late challenge by McMaster to take the bronze by a score of 21 - 17.
Andrew Hosie was the man in charge with Breanne Freeman on one touch and Karen Lozada on the other. Rose Labreche acted as the #4 official.
The OUA Gold match was every bit as exciting as the games which had gone before it. With regulation time just about complete, Western were camped on the Queens 5 metre line knowing that a try would give them victory and the Gold. One last drive brought them within 2 metres of the goal line. The whistle went but there was no time for another effort. The Gold went to Queens by the narrowest of margins.
Blowing that final whistle was Referee Derek Stoltz who had been assisted by Andrew Hall and Daniel Gana on the touch lines and Steve Gasparek as #4.
So ended the college season. A word of thanks to all who made it a sucess - match officials, coaches, convenors and, above all, the players. |
